Growing Drug Abuse Causing Problem In Uttarakhand

Dehradun-Devashish Bisht : Drug abuse in uttrakhand is one of the major problems in our state. A study shows that about 30% of teens  falling in the age group 14-20 are indulged in drug abuse in one form or another.Smack and cocaine are getting popular among rich teens while bond, fevicol etc are the choices of poor.The economic  division signifies that money don’t play a major role and its about society and its people, major campaigns are held by police and different NGO’s to curb this problem from a long time but with no effects. Drug abuse is spreading its roots in the rural areas of Pithoragarh, Almora, Pauri, Tehri etc.

While cities like Dehradun, Haldwani, Rudrapur, Haridwar etc are getting supplies of smack, heroin, cocaine from bigger cities , naturally grown hashish and ganja are easily available in the state.Around 25% youth in urban areas are addicted to one or other  form of drug abuse. The paddlers are making huge profit in the state targeting mainly school and college going teens.Smoking marijuana(ganja) and hashish is becoming more and more popular among different age groups.

As the state is  source of  the best quality hashish ,and it is supplied to cities like –Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru etc.  A report shows that around 86 kg of charas has been seized from different areas in the state this year alone. Approximately , 1 tola(11.05gm) is being sold at rs.1000, and the rates go up with the quality. The city of Haldwani in Nainital district is becoming the epicenter of drug abuse in Kumaon region.

Many Cases of theft and other crimes reported are committed after taking doses of these drugs. These drugs are ruining the lives of not only these teens but also their families are suffering from this crisis.The government is yet to take any effective measure to curb this growing problem. While the society needs to teach  kids about the harms and effects of substance abuse. Let us wait for the new government to take further steps regarding this growing issue in the state.

For drug abuse Nainital Police is running a mission in capataincy of SSP Janmejay Khanduri. His team has arrested many people trying to sale these type of drugs.
